trust the picture

Last Friday, the head cold that had been sneaking up on me the past few weeks (Gracie battled it first, then Tom… I thought I dodged it) came on full-force. So up until Tuesday this week, I pretty much did as little gardening as necessary. I’m so glad that I repotted the plants that really needed it last week. I was able to basically let the garden go for a handful of days and it was okay.

On Tuesday I felt good enough to spend some time out there so I basically did a bit of watering (amazing! some of the plants needed water!!) and pest control. Yesterday (Wednesday) I did a bunch of much-needed pruning and repotted my bonsai.

I’ve had the bonsai for a few years and I still don’t know exactly what I’m doing. I was hesitant to cut it until I happened to catch a few minutes of the old Karate Kid movie on TV, and Mr. Miyagi told Daniel to basically close his eyes, imagine a tree, and then cut the bonsai like that tree in his mind (“trust the picture”). So I took his advice and it seems to be working. It’s actually kinda fun, once you realize that unless you take a tiny ax to the “trunk” and chop the tree down you can’t really hurt it. I like cutting it into different formations.

We’ve had cloudy and humid weather, but there’s a change in the air. Could it be fall? One can only hope.
