First happy surprise: after whining about the weather, I went out back and found this beautiful blossom on one of my dwarf hibiscus plants. It’s bloomed before (it’s not prolific, but it comes and goes) but never in these particular colors- it’s always been more of an all-over peachy yellow. I’m not sure if it’s the new fertilizer or the new location (I moved the pot to a sunnier space) but… what a lovely surprise. It sort of renewed my faith in gardening, and reminded me that even when it seems like nothing is happening in the garden, there really *is* some growth going on where I can’t see it.
Second “surprise”: Last week, my family and I were running errands in Naples and I decided to stop by the nursery and see if they got any of their new stock in for fall. They had some new stock, but what really caught my eye was the big sale that they were having.
I spent $20 and wound up getting a box full of beautiful plants- geraniums, lantana, and a few other things that I am familiar enough with to know that if I plant them now, the rainy weather won’t instantly kill them.
It was such a pleasure to bring them home and set about getting them set up in their new pots, and getting them situated in the garden. It gave me a few days of work, and it made everything look fresh and new again.
It’s amazing what just a few inexpensive plants can do for a garden- and a mood!
