holiday goodness

Christmas was *great* in the gardening sense. I asked for a few plants that I really have wanted, but never purchased. Tom got me a BUNCH of great stuff: a peony seedling, a new hibiscus (BLUE double- can’t wait to see this one when it blooms!), two camillia (one a four year bonsai, the other a baby seedling), and a mushroom growing kit (see above).

I have talked to him about growing mushrooms for a while, but forgot to ask for the kit so it was a great surprise to open it. I am so excited to try it out. I don’t know why the idea fascinates me so much, but it’s sort of creepy-cool.

I repotted all the new plants (besides the bonsai) yesterday and it was good, dirty fun to do a big job like that.

Another great surprise this week- my nasturtiums started blooming. And a lot of them are red, even though I didn’t *plant* that many red ones. It’s ironic because last year I REALLY wanted red nasturtium, and none of the red varieties I planted actually bloomed red. But one seed from a mix bloomed huge red double blossoms, so I carefully gathered seeds from it.

I had ONE seed leftover from the seeds I managed to gather, and it was the first nasturtium I planted back in September for this current season. It started blooming last week. It feels kinda cool, seeing this plant “come back” through one of its seeds.

What about you- did you get any garden goodies for the holidays? Also, spring is just around the corner. I got my first garden catalogue in the mail yesterday… any plans for the spring garden yet?
