from seed to bloom – Disco Belle Hibiscus

Sometime in the winter I planted yet another hibiscus seed (Disco Belle from Park). I wasn’t expecting it to grow, because I had tried growing hibiscus from seed before and the seeds never sprouted- there were only ten or so in the packet and every time I planted one something would happen (rain, cold snap, etc.) and the seed would just turn to mush before it had a chance to do anything.

But, lo and behold, the last seed took.

It didn’t do much at first, but in the last month it went from being a few inches tall to being about three feet tall.

And then, it started growing little buds that became BIG buds:

And the next day, there was this:

To say I am pleased is an understatement. These are HUGE blossoms, larger than my other hibiscus. And they are beautifully round and pleated, and a cool pink color that almost looks lilac in certain lights.

I think hibiscus from seed might be the newest garden obsession for me, that’s IF I can get the seeds in the soil before the summer rains really start. This week we had two storms, one pretty major, and this morning there was stuff ALL over the weather radar, so I must concede to the fact summer is upon us. Hopefully it will be a mild, DRY summer for us. (Pretty, pretty please!)
