Chris and I went down to the Texas coast for a short weekend getaway and on our way down I was remembering a nursery I had heard about that I thought was in Rosenberg, Texas. Chris remembered a name and his his mom look up the address for us so we could check it out on the way back. It ended up turning out that we were remembering two different places but I didn’t realize that until well after we’d returned home and I was online looking up plants. The one I was thinking of was Caldwell Nursery which is indeed in Rosenberg but he was thinking of Enchanted Gardens in nearby Richmond, which is where we ended up.
I was immediately, to use the name of the store, enchanted, with this plant as soon as we walked in. Luckily there was a worker, which turned out to be one of the owners, nearby to answer our question about what the plant was. He said it was a snapdragon tree and that there weren’t any in stock at the moment, no matter they won’t handle a freeze. Gmelina philippensis is the species name if you want to look for it for yourself. It was swoon worthy, that’s for sure!
Some of their plants were labeled well, others weren’t. This seems to be common at even the best garden centers. It gets a little frustrating but it helps when the customer service is available and knowledgeable about the plants too, which in our several interactions with the owner seemed to good in that aspect.
I would definitely make this a stop any time I’m in this area. I’ll have to also keep in mind to visit the other nursery too. There’s nothing like finding an interesting and well maintained nursery.
