I think it was back in late February or early March when I decided I wanted to add some flowers to the garden. There wasn’t a lot going on in the side beds and so I bought a bunch of cheap seed packets at the dollar store and went to town. Some things sprouted, other things didn’t and I had to make a few new rounds of seeding, but a few weeks ago everything opened up into blooming glory. It was magnificent! The sunflowers are already going to seed and I will start another round of them soon because they will handle the heat and lack of water throughout the summer. The gladiolus are already done—I kept forgetting my camera for several days and I barely made it in time to get these photos; I managed to get the last open flowers at the top of the stalk. The zinnias—oh they are probably my favorite right now. I planted them thick and close together and so they have a lovely clump going on. The white birdhouse gourd flower doesn’t even show that we now have nearly full sized gourds hanging on the back fence at the garden.
May have been an amazing month, very chaotic and full in the garden. I am remembering how hard it is to keep up with things in the height of the growing season. It was one reason I retreated from doing yard work in the summer when I lived in Florida—it was too much!
There is always something to be done in the garden!
